Nature’s Variety Raw Boost Mixers Food Topper for Cats

Raw food diets have become increasingly popular for pets over the past few years. This is especially true for dogs; although, cats are now getting more raw food options. I was able to try some. Rather, my cats were able to try some. Chewy was so kind as to send me a package of Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost Mixers in the chicken flavor.

Now, most food toppers I’ve tried tend to be wet, which isn’t the case with this product. Another difference is that this one is made from pure protein. No fillers here! Those fillers are part of the reason why pets have such big — and stinky — poos, which is why some of the people who I know that now do a raw diet switched.

It’s then freeze-dried, so the texture is quite a bit different from other types of cat treats and toppers. The toppers are much bigger than kibble and almost appear like styrofoam. They’re light and airy like that. I’m sure it’s because it’s been freeze-dried, but it definitely is different than other toppers I’ve tried, which have been wet. You could certainly try this wet or crumble it if your cat prefers something a little more bite-sized, of course. I just haven’t.

Interestingly, Goliath wasn’t particularly fond of the food topper. I’m not sure if it was a taste or texture thing. It’s interesting because he’s not really picky.  A lot of the reviews say their cats loved them and go after them as a treat. But Goliath just didn’t seem interested.Phantom, on the other hand, was happy enough to gobble them all up. Because only one cat really likes the food topper, it’s lasted me a little longer. There are 24 servings

Phantom, on the other hand, was happy enough to gobble them all up. Because only one cat really likes the food topper, it’s lasted me a little longer. There are 24 servings in the cat food topper bag. I typically toss a few on top of their dry food, and I probably add a bit more than the 1/8 cup recommendation.

They’re mostly getting protein with a bit of apples, carrots and squash. Even the chicken it’s made from is cage-free, so I suspect both the ingredients and the production method are going to attract the type of people who value the raw food diet for their pets. It’s certainly an affordable way to add some protein to your pet’s diet to see if it helps teeth, coat, etc.

As for me, I haven’t noticed much difference in my cats. It’s spring so they’re shedding, but dander is relatively low. Their coats are shiny as usual. I have no complaints.

But because Goliath wasn’t a big fan, I can’t see myself purchasing Nature’s Variety Raw Boost Mixers Food Topper for Cats in the future. Your mileage may vary, of course.
